Accountability problem hits Lagos marathon
The Local organising committee of the Access Bank/Lagos City Marathon are running around to put a finishing touch to the event as they battle a problem of paucity of fund as the sponsor appears not forthcoming over inability of the organiser to give account of the fund released.
According to information, the sponsors, Access Bank have demanded an account of the monies so far released, before they could release more money.
This cash crunch has led to the intervention of the Lagos governor to ensure the event takes place.
Up till now race t-shirts and other things are still awaited.
In the meantime, the Athletic Federation of Nigeria Chairman, Solomon Ogba assures the show must go on “Already we have the elite athletes on ground. They are being kept at the Eko Hotels, even at that we have more than the number of international athletes we expected, and we have put them in hotels around Surulere. “It is an Olympic year and most of the athletes here are aiming to run and get qualification times. So we are looking forward to a good start and finish on Saturday,”
Among the elite athletes that have arrived for the event is Peter Kiplagat who won the 2015 Geneva Marathon.
A total prize money of N92 million will be won for the 42km race that will start at the National Stadium Lagos and finish at the Eko Atlantic City.
